Beneath her elegance and grace, her thoughtfulness and humor, Alice was a political activist. Advocacy for the Bay Area’s endangered architectural landmarks was at the heart of her career and her life.
Though Alice’s philanthropy supported a number of preservation organizations and causes, the Environmental Design Archives was especially meaningful to her. A graduate of the College of Environmental Design, she served on the Environmental Design Archives Advisory Board for a decade, and was instrumental in raising awareness of the collection’s importance and it’s desperate need for financial support. Thanks to Alice and her fellow board members, the CED Archive has conserved, catalogued, and made available to scholars an astonishing collection of drawings and records of Bay Area architects.
Two years ago, Alice donated her own archive, a record of preservation of many of the most significant Bay Area buildings, to the EDA. In Alice’s memory, her husband, firm, and friends recommend and encourage donations to the University of California at Berkeley Environmental Design Archives in memory of Alice.
Donations will be used to fund a research fellowship in Alice's name.
Details of exactly how to do this, on-line or by mail, are included in this website. To donate by mail, follow the instructions on this link. To donate on-line, visit this link and follow the instructions below.
